Native school attendance books, 1844-1845, n.d. (inclusive) [microform].

Attendance rolls generally kept by native school teachers, though there is evidence of William Colenso's hand in some of them. Earliest register (1844) is for the school at Waimate, Northland; the remaining books relate to schools in the Wairarapa district. It is noteworthy that both Mohi Torohanga and Paratene Te Okawhare are listed as pupils at the schools; they are the source of the text scribed Te Whatahoro and subsequently used by S.P. Smith in writing about Maori cosmology and origins; other notable pupils include Te Horo and Paora Te Potangaroa who both established prophetic movements. There is a note on one of the books in Elsdon Best's hand.
